The paranormal fields would not exist without People & Groups that engage in the subject areas.
The interested private individual can have any faith (or “un-faith”) in the phenomena concerned. He/she might be a very skeptical person who denies all, or most, expressions of the phenomena. On the other hand she/he may even be considered a cultist or fantasy-prone personality who believes in all & everything. She/he might be an inquiring person who spends a whole life collecting books and facts for her/his own mind, or for writing books or magazine articles.
All personalities are relevant to our People archive where we preserve personal papers, correspondence and all different signs of actions by individuals.
The same thing goes with groups where people join forces to discuss, investigate or even promote some phenomena. Interest groups can take the forms of everything from two people meeting, or corresponding regularly, to large organizations of maybe 30-40.000 people who all share a particular world-view. There are long-standing groups like the (British) Society for Psychical Research (SPR) of which AFU has all the proceedings & journals since 1882.
All archival matters that mirror the beliefs and actions of any person or group in the phenomena areas would be of interest to us. Since 1993 AFU is a member of Folkrörelsernas Arkivförbund (FA), a Swedish organisation for hundreds of archives that gather documents and files from all kinds of “people’s movements”. Sweden has a rich and long-standing tradition in this area. There is a Swedish national database (NAD, managed by the Swedish National Archives) of groups & associations. Here AFU has entered referring index posts for most Swedish organisations where we have records in our files (several hundred).
What we have done with Swedish paranormal groups, mainly in the field of UFOlogy, can be repeated on a larger scale with groups & societies all over the world, and in all fields of phenomena study.
